When starting your journey to find the perfect Biewer your first step should be to get
to
know your breeder, they are the best judge of the personalities of their dogs both
male and female.  In talking with many pet owners after they have adopted or been
adopted by a Biewer the most common statement is the gender of my dog is not as
important as I thought it would be, his/her personality is more important to me.

Let's take a closer look at the female

Most calls for pet dogs are from people wanting a sweet little girl that they can dress up
-- and who wouldn't with all the wonderful pet products now available.

Some people don't think females display alpha behaviours like 'marking' and/or
'humping' and that they are always sweet little cuddle buddies. They believe that
females are more docile, are attentive and do not participate in fighting over dominance.

Well folks, this is not true
and they didn't get the name 'bitch' for nothing!

  • In the dog pack females usually rule the roost
  • determine pecking order and who competes to maintain and/or alter that order
  • females tend to be more reserved or dignified as they age
  • females usually come to you for attention, when she's had enough, she will move
    away
  • the female is less likely to wage a dominance battle with YOU, but she can be
cunning and resourceful in getting her own way.
  • females can be very sweet and loving when they're happy -- but grumpy if
something isn't to their liking. Female dogs are experts at The Dirty Look and
    The Sulk.
  • females are more prone to mood swings and emotional theatrics. One day she
may be sweet and affectionate-the next day reserved and withdrawn or even
    grumpy.
  • females also have periods of being 'in heat' unless spayed. Seasonal heats can be a
three week long  hassle not just for the female, but you and every male dog in the
neighborhood.  Heats happen twice a year.
  • females are, as a result, more independent, stubborn, and territorial than their
    male counterparts.
  • most fights will usually break out between 2 females.
  • female dogs squat to urinate, so they pee more neatly and unobtrusively than
male dogs. Some dominant females, however, DO make a credible attempt to lift
their leg -- these female dogs will often mark territory much like a male. If you
own multiple dogs, a dominant female may scout around sniffing for places
where the other dogs have peed, so she can "cover" it with her own scent.
  • female Biewers are usually easier to house train than males because  they are
    more independent

Females who will not be used for breeding should be spayed for their own
health and safety.  Most breeders will not sell pet females unless they are
either spayed or the new owner agrees to have her spayed.

Now let's look at the male

Males are usually more:

  • affectionate
  • exuberant
  • attentive
  • more demanding of attention
  • attached to their people.
  • they tend to be more steadfast, reliable, and less moody.
  • more outgoing,
  • more accepting of other pets,
  • and take quicker to children.
  • some male dogs can be bolder and more aggressive than females, while other
males are "goofy" and "klutzy" -- "big softies"

Most boys are easily motivated by food (how true!!) and praise, and so eager to please
that training is easy. However, males can be more easily distracted during training, as
males like to play so often. And no matter what age, he is more likely to act silly and
more puppy-like, always wanting to play games. Boys are fun-loving until the day they
die. Boys are always waiting for your attention and near at hand.
The age old dilemma
which is better
male or female
Another factor which should be taken into consideration before deciding on whether to adopt a
male versus a female is that male canines tend to bond to the women in the household and female
canines bond to the man in the household.

Many women have bought females for themselves only to have the female
bond with their husband.

They end up buying a male for themselves!!
